Tattoo design for a friend who wanted elements of both Game of Thrones and Harry Potter to be included. Here we have weirwood leaves and Arya’s sword Needle from Game of Thrones and a doe and lilies for Harry’s mother. A Deathly Hallows symbol is etched into the deer’s forehead. I made the deer an albino as I thought this would be a nice tie in with the white raven in GoT that heralds the coming of Winter 🙂
‘He proceeded to build a fence another three feet above the gate to ensure I couldn’t see out and wouldn’t consider it an escape route in the future. I didn’t want to escape but I had to have routes planned in case the jet monster came back and I couldn’t control my fear. I watched with interest as Richard sawed and hammered in nails to make the defence strong.’
After numerous escape attempts by frightened Dylan, Karen and Richard decide to take action, raising the height of the garden fences to keep the scared pup at home. Will this effort stop him, I think not…
This is my eighth illustration for Karen Sanderson’s ‘Where’s Dylan? The Story of an Anxious Dog’.
‘Why was the Jet Monster trying to attack me and no one else? No! It’s just fear driving me away! I must try to take take control of the fear if I can. And with that thought in mind I collapsed on my bed, totally exhausted, and fell asleep.’
After escaping his owners, fleeing cross-country and hiding out in other people’s gardens – all in order to escape the Jet Monster – Dylan is finally returned home from his excursion, a little worse for wear.

‘There was a sudden, horrific, rumbling noise above us and I was fearful for my life. It rattled the windows of the kennel and hurt my ears dreadfully. I looked up to see a winged monster in the sky. It was far bigger than any bird I had ever seen and had large, spreading wings. It left a trail of grey smoke as it flew by. Was it my imagination? It appeared to have sharp teeth and menacing eyes glaring down at me.’
Dylan’s first terrifying encounter with what he later labels as the ‘Jet Monster’. While boarding at a nearby kennels while his humans are away, Dylan hears the terrible roar of a huge metal beast screaming overhead. In a panic, Dylan tries desperately to escape, injuring himself in the process. The Jet Monster has struck once, will it return?

‘Sometimes Richard takes us through the thickest parts of the wood where we can see the deer. He doesn’t like us chasing them so I pretend to play Hide and Seek and run off to try to catch one. I never have… YET!

‘…suddenly, a hug, wheeled container rumbled towards us along the road. I was certain we’d meet an early death so I struggled to free myself from the lead, turning frantically in circles, and getting tangled up with Megan… “You’re such a scaredy pup,” snarled Megan, “you’ve spoiled the walk.”

‘There were lots of things to explore: like a ball, lots of rubbery toys to chew on and a big box. The box was open at one end and Megan crawled inside saying, “Can’t find me.” I jumped up on top of the box and looked down. Her legs were sticking out which made me laugh. Then it was my turn to crawl inside. We were having such fun. Thinking back, I’ve always needed hideaway places in my life, especially when I’m anxious…’

‘”What’s all this barking about?” Karen asked. “You’re quite safe but you need to understand that dogs sleep here and humans sleep upstairs. Now go back to sleep and I’ll see you in the morning.” She picked us both up and planted a kiss on the top of our heads, then put us back to bed saying, “Goodnight, don’t let the bed bugs bite”.

Recently finished work on this excitable pup of a project. ‘Where’s Dylan?’ The story of an anxious dog’ by Karen Sanderson is a wonderful read that follows Dylan on a fear-facing adventure that children will love and relate to, giving insight into their pet’s behaviours and offering guidance on some of life’s obstacles.
