Saturday saw the launch of ‘The Forgotten and the Fantastical 2’, a collection of fairytale-inspired short stories and the second book for which I have produced illustrations. TFATF2 was published by Mother’s Milk Books, an independent publisher in Nottingham, UK. The stories weave the trials of human emotion through settings both contemporary and long ago and deal with sacrifice, love, loss, hope and finding oneself in a world dominated by society’s pressure to conform. Realisation soon dawns on the reader that, in the end, the tales that we dismiss as ‘fairy stories’ are actually being played out in life, every single day. The characters and settings may have changed – the spell of the traditional wicked witch may now have become the effects of commercialism, a tower once upon a time may now be a high-rise flat at The Elephant and Castle, London – but there’s no mistaking the power of the lessons that each story teaches.
To discover the artistry and storytelling of 17 fantastic authors, and of course to see my very finely detailed internal illustrations, please purchase a copy from the Mother’s Milk Books Shop. The amazing cover artwork is by the wonderful and multi-talented Marija Smits. Visit her blog for her experiences of writing, editing and illustration!
